Lockheed C-5 GalaxyShare
This model of the Lockheed Galaxy C-5 is an excellent representation of the real aircraft. The download includes full animation with night textures, light effects and smoke systems with options for contrails or vapor trails, at your option. Installation instructions are included in the file, and generally provide for an easy set up with your flight simulator. The real Galaxy C-5 is a mega plane and monster of an aircraft. It rivals other transporters such as the Antonov AN-124 Ruslan (available for download here), the Airbus A380 (available for download here), the Boeing 747 (many available here) and the Antonov AN-225 (available here). The Lockheed C-5 Galaxy is a large military transport aircraft built by Lockheed. It was designed to provide strategic heavy airlift over intercontinental distances and to carry outsize and oversize cargo. The C-5 Galaxy has been operated by the United States Air Force (USAF) since 1969 and is one of the largest military aircraft in the world. The first C-5 was delivered to the USAF on December 17, 1969. In the early 1970s, NASA considered the C-5 for the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft role, to transport the Space Shuttle to Kennedy Space Center. However, they rejected it in favor of the Boeing 747, in part due to the 747's low-wing design. In contrast, the Soviet Union chose to transport its shuttles using the high-winged An-225, which derives from the An-124, which is similar in design and function to the C-5.

Dornier 328-T British Airways FSXShare
This Dornier 328-T (stands for "Turboprop" version) model includes three liveries: British Airways, Central Mountain Air and Australian Maritime Safety Authority. The designer, Premier Aircraft Design (PAD), has included all moving parts, pilots, a 3-D cockpit and excellent graphics - a characteristic common among most PAD aircraft. This reviewer did not experience any significant or noteworthy flight handling issues and was overall comfortable with flying the aircraft. The Dornier 328 is a turboprop-powered commuter airliner. Initially produced by Dornier Luftfahrt GmbH, the firm was acquired in 1996 by Fairchild Aircraft. The resulting firm, named Fairchild-Dornier, manufactured the 328 family in Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany, conducted sales from San Antonio, Texas, United States, and supported the product line from both locations. 328 Support Services GmbH currently hold the type certificate for this aircraft. The basic 328 first flew on December 6, 1991 and entered commercial service in October 1993. The 328's new fuselage allowed for comfortable 3-abreast seating, with the potential for a 4-abreast configuration. In 2005, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) (the livery for which is included in the PAD model) commissioned five 328-100s and stationed around the Australian coastline to provide a 24 hour, 30 minute response capability. There are several variants of the 328: The -100 is the initial version; the -110 has greater range and weights; the -120 has greater STOL capability; the -130 has enhanced rudder control; and the 328JET is a turbofan-powered variant. Central Mountain Air is a Canadian regional airline. This aircraft is also available for download from the official PAD web site at http://www.premaircraft.com/do328/index.html

MalÈv Hungarian Airlines Cessna 172 Trainer for FSXShare
The Cessna 172 Skyhawk is a four-seat, single-engine, high-wing fixed-wing aircraft. First flown in 1955 and still in production, more Cessna 172s have been built than any other aircraft. As of 2008, more than 43,000 had been built. The various versions of Cessna 172 are widely used as training aircraft for military and non-military purposes. The Iraqi military uses several Cessna 172 aircraft to train new pilots. MalÈv Hungarian Airlines (Hungarian: Magyar LÈgikzlekedÈsi V·llalat, abbreviated MalÈv), is the flag carrier airline of Hungary and is based at Budapest Ferihegy International Airport. It is the principal Hungarian airline and flies to 50 cities in 34 countries worldwide. A real-life picture of the MalÈv Aero Club Cessna 172 is available here. It is not clear how many of these MalÈv exist. The author of this site doesn't speak Hungarian and his friend in Pecs, Hungary, is so slow in writing back. This download includes textures for the default FSX Cessna 172. Installation is very simple, and instructions are included. The detail is very nice.

Air France Concorde SST for FSXShare
This Air France Concorde SST (supersonic transport) aircraft is one of the only Flight Simulator X concordes available for download. The concorde works for Flight Simulator 2004, too, with some adjustments. The download includes the special panel created by Francisco Silva. The concorde features a very nice model and detailed graphics, including built-in pilots and exquisite interior cabin views. The cockpit has full 3-D detail and permits nice round about views. Additional add-ons are recommended for more detail but the download is already a full model. For Concorde sounds, search online for "cncsstsn.zip" and for smoke effects, search "njs_final.zip." Installation of those extras can be a pain, however. The included readme file outlines special keys to activate the various features of the aircraft. The Concorde aircraft was a turbojet-powered supersonic passenger airliner, a supersonic transport (SST). It was a product of an Anglo-French government treaty, combining the manufacturing efforts of Aerospatiale and the British Aircraft Corporation (BAC). First flown in 1969, the Concorde entered service in 1976 and continued for 27 years. For a number of years, the aircraft's name was originally spelled without the trailing "e" in Britain until, eventually, the French spelling prevailed and the name was officially changed back to "Concorde." The Concorde flew regular transatlantic flights from London Heathrow (British Airways) and Paris Charles de Gaulle (Air France) to New York JFK and Washington Dulles, profitably flying these routes at record speeds, in less than half the time of other airliners. The fastest flight was from London Heathrow to New York JFK on the 7th of February 1996 on a (British Airways) G-BOAD in 2hrs 52mins and 59secs from take off to touch down. On April 10, 2003, Air France and British Airways simultaneously announced that they would retire Concorde later that year. They cited low passenger numbers following the 25 July 2000 crash, the slump in air travel following the September 11 attacks and rising maintenance costs. Air France made its final commercial Concorde landing in the United States in New York City from Paris on May 30, 2003. Fire trucks sprayed the traditional arcs of water above F-BTSD on the tarmac of John F. Kennedy airport. The final passenger flight for the airline's SSTs was a charter around the Bay of Biscay. During the following week, on June 2 and 3, June 2003, F-BTSD flew a final round-trip from Paris to New York and back for airline staff and long-time employees in the airline's Concorde operations. Air France's final Concorde flight took place on June 27, 2003 when F-BVFC retired to Toulouse. If you are looking for the so-called "konkordski" Tupolev TU-144, the Soviet version of the Concorde, click here to download.

Air France/Aerolineas Argentinas Airbus A340-200 for FSXShare
This Airbus A340, principally created by Thomas Ruth of Germany, is one of the best free-for-use Flight Simulator X models available on the Internet. Certain textures are contributed by others, including, notably, Jon Murchison. The model is created with detail in mind, including very good wing views and cockpit features. This download includes a customized panel with nice details, as well as a TFT panel add-on by Thomas. The Air France (new colors) livery by Jon, along with the Aerolineas Argentinas livery, are favorite liveries available for this Airbus. Installation instructions are included in the download. The Airbus A340 is a long-range four-engined wide-body commercial passenger airliner manufactured by Airbus, a subsidiary of EADS. It seats between 261 and 380 passengers and has a range between 6,700 and 9,000 NM. It is similar in design to the twin-engined A330. Initial A340 versions share the fuselage and wing of the A330 while later models are longer and have larger wings. The first published studies for the A340 were done in 1981. The A340 was launched in June 1987 as a long-range complement to the short-range A320 and the medium-range A300. Both the A330 and A340 are assembled on the same final assembly line at Toulouse-Blagnac, France. The four-engined A340 is able to fly long over-water routes. With the introduction of higher gross weight Boeing 777s such as the 777-200ER and specifically 777-300ER, sales of the A340 began to decline. Over the last few years the 777 has outsold the A340 by a wide margin. Air France (formally Societe Air France), based in Roissy-en-France, France, is one of the world's largest airlines. It is a subsidiary of the Air France-KLM Group and a founding member of the SkyTeam global airline alliance. Air France flies to 20 domestic destinations and operates worldwide scheduled passenger and cargo services to 150 international destinations in 83 countries (including Overseas departments and territories of France). Aerolineas Argentinas is the largest domestic and international airline in Argentina and serves as Argentina's flag carrier. It accounts for around 83% of Argentina's domestic traffic and 52% of international flights from Ministro Pistarini International Airport, which is located in Ezeiza, Buenos Aires. Aerolineas Argentinas and LAN Airlines are the only Latin American airlines that fly to Oceania.

Augusta A109 with various liveries (FSX and FS2004)Share
The Agusta A109 (now AW109) is a helicopter manufactured by Agusta (now AgustaWestland) of Italy. It is a light-weight, twin engine, eight seat multi-purpose helicopter. The AgustaWestland AW119 Koala is a single-engine development. The sale of the Agusta A109 to the Belgian armed forces in 1988 gave rise to a bribing scandal when it was revealed the company had given the Belgian Socialists over 50 million francs to get the sale. This scandal led to the resignation and conviction of NATO Secretary General Willy Claes. The Microsoft Flight Simulator version available for download is a very good replica of the A109 and includes a high quality virtual panel (360 functionality) and detailed switch panels. I don't usually fly helicopters because they aren't easy to fly. This one, however, is fairly forgiving with respect to flight characteristics and doesn't start swooping or swinging unintentionally. You will need to be the judge of whether you want this type of aircraft. I like it. The exterior appearance is very nice and complements the interior. Several different liveries are available including an Italian Caribinieri, Medivac, commercial, and many others. If I remember correctly, there are six versions. The following Wikipedia site provides a nice overview of the specifications of the real world A109/AW109: Click here.

Mitsubishi MU-2E Japanese Coast Guard for FSXShare
This is a new model with full animation, dynamic shine and reflective textures. The model, created specifically for FSX, includes a 2D panel and virtual cockpit. This is a non-pressurized version of the Mitsubishi MU-2E with radars and a sliding door which can be used to drop survival equipment. The Mitsubishi MU-2 is one of postwar Japan's most successful aircraft. It is a high-wing and twin-engine turboprop.Work on the MU-2, Mitsubishi's first postwar aircraft design, began in 1956. Designed as a light twin turboprop transport suitable for a variety of civil and military roles, the MU-2 first flew on September 14, 1963. This first MU-2, and the three MU-2As built, were powered by Turbomeca Astazou turboprop. Civil MU-2s powered by Garret engines were certified as variants of the MU-2B, using the MU-2B type followed by a number. For marketing purposes, each variant was given a suffix letter; the MU-2B-10, for example, was sold as the MU-2D, while the MU-2B-36A was marketed as the MU-2N. The Japanese armed forces purchased four unpressurized MU-2Cs and 16 search and rescue variants designated MU-2E. Like all aircraft, the safety record of the MU-2 has been examined by government agencies and found to be acceptable when compared to other aircraft in its class; it was involved in 11 accidents with a total of 12 fatalities in a single 18 month period. Also, as reported by CNBC, there have been a total of 330 fatalities from MU-2 crashes. However, there have been years where the MU-2 had no accidents at all. As of October 2005, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has begun a safety evaluation of the aircraft and decided that the aircraft has met its certification requirements - it is safe when operated by properly trained pilots who operate properly maintained aircraft. The FAA is in the process of mandating training specific to the MU-2 as it has in the past for other aircraft. When such mandated training was required outside of the U.S. the MU-2 accident record was vastly improved.

F-22 Raptor United States Airforce (for FS X)Share
The F-22 Raptor is an American fighter aircraft that uses stealth technology. It is an air superiority fighter, but is equipped for ground attack, electronic warfare, and signals intelligence roles as well. The United States Air Force considers the F-22 a critical component of the US strike force. The F-22 is claimed by several sources to be the worldís most effective air superiority fighter. The US Air Force claims that the F-22 cannot be matched by any known or projected fighter aircraft. Air Marshal Angus Houston, chief of the Australian Defence Force, and former head of the Royal Australian Air Force, said in 2004 that the "F-22 will be the most outstanding fighter plane ever built." This FS X model has great features including detailed textures, a realistic panel, and exciting flight characteristics. The speed of this aircraft is extreme - so be sure to practice high-speed landings if you are used to landing a "mere" Cessna. Click on the image to view a full sized screenshot. Antonov An-124 Ruslan for FSXShare
The Antonov An-124 "Ruslan" is a mighty jet engined transporter rivalin only the Antonov An-125 in size. The An-125 is available for download from fsaerospace.com here (it is this site's most popular free download). The An-124 is a classic behemoth originating from development efforts by the Soviet Union beginning as early as the mid-1980s. The aircraft is currently serviced by, among other companies, Russian cargo company Volga-Dnepr which has been contracting with Boeing for delivery of outsize aircraft components to Boeing's Everett plant. The An-124 is not in production as of the time of this writing, but rumors persist that production of new aircraft is to resume in late 2008 (which, as of this writing, is outdated). Physically, the An-124 is similar to the American Lockheed C-5 Galaxy, albeit 25% larger with respect to payload, and instead of the Galaxy's T-tail, the An-124 uses a conventional empannage similar to the Boeing 747. Since the type was initially designed for only occasional military use, original An-124s were built with a projected service life of 7,500 flight hours with possibility for extension. However many airframes have flown more than 15,000 flight hours. In response to complaints by commercial users, that aircraft built after 2000 (the An-124-100) have an improved service life of 24,000 hours, older airframes are being upgraded to this standard. The works on its extension up to 40,000 flight hours are being performed. The Kyiv Aviation Plant AVIANT offers upgrades to the N-124-100-150 version. In May 2008, at the Berlin Air Show, it was reported that the governments of Russia and Ukraine were closing in on final details to restart production of the An-124. The new variant, to be known as the An-124-150, will feature several new features including a maximum lift capacity of 150 tonnes. This Microsoft Flight Simulator X version of the An-124 is very nice to fly but difficult to control until the aircraft is well into the air. Outside graphics are well done with several moving parts. To view a good summary of the An-124 including real world pictures, check out the related Wikipedia entry.

BAe 146-100 Flybe for X-PlaneShare
BAe 146-100 Flybe aircraft created by Andreas Much of The Avroliner Project. Andreas develops models for X-Plane 7 through 9 based on the very popular BAe 146 aircraft type. This download includes the Flybe livery to be used with Andreas' base BAe 146. Requires the BAe 146-100/RJ100 aircraft from The Avroliner Project. Andreas has done a very nice job creating the model and graphics. The special, included cockpit has good detail and a 3D version, although the 3D details are lacking comparable models available for Flight Simulator X. The aircraft includes moving parts, including moving gear and flaps, along with rotating jet turbines. Installation of this livery is very easy - unzip the download into the "liveries" folder within the aircraft's directory (create the "liveries" directory if it doesn't exist yet). Flybe Limited is a British airline based at Exeter International Airport, England. It operates over 180 routes between over 55 European airports. The airline's largest base is Southampton Airport and it has other large bases at Manchester Airport, Birmingham Airport and Belfast City Airport and a total of 14 aircraft and crew bases across the United Kingdom, the Channel Islands and Isle of Man. Flybe started operations on November 1, 1979 as Jersey European Airways (JEA), after taking over the operations of Intra Airways. Jersey European Airways was the brainchild of John Habin, a resident of Jersey and the majority investor in JEA. Having sold Aviation Beauport and other business interests, Habin established a few key routes from Jersey to the UK. Jersey European Airways was taken over in 1983 by Jack Walker's Walker Steel Group who were already the parent company of Blackpool based charter airline Spacegrand Aviation. The two airlines were run separately, with partially shared management, until their amalgamation within the Walker Aviation Group in 1985, under the Jersey European name. The airline rebranded as British European in June 2000, shortening this title to Flybe on July 18, 2002 and repositioning itself as a full service, low-fare airline. On November 3, 2006 it was announced that agreement in principle had been reached for Flybe to acquire BA Connect, with the exception of London City Airport services. The acquisition was completed in March 2007. The airline is owned by Rosedale Aviation Holdings (69%), Flybe staff (16%) and British Airways (15%) as a consequence of the acquisition of BA Connect. It has 3,000 employees at January 2008. A version of this aircraft is available for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 (9) here.

Bombardier Dash 8-100 (US Airways Express/Carribean Sun) forShare
The Bombardier Dash 8 (formerly the de Havilland Canada Dash 8, sometimes abbreviated as DHC-8) is a series of twin-engined, medium range, turboprop airliners. Introduced by de Havilland Canada (DHC) in 1984, they are now produced by Bombardier Aerospace. Since 1996, the aircraft have been known as the Q Series, for "quiet." Over 1000 Dash 8s of all models have been built. The price tag for a -100 series Dash 8 is approximately $12.5 million. The aircraft is popular among airlines worldwide for regional service and is frequently used by major airlines' low-cost subsidiaries, including, for example, Air Canada JAZZ. The Carribean Sun airline, known for short as Caribbean Sun, was headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA and operated regional services in the Caribbean between January 2003 and January 2007. Its main base was Luis MuÒoz MarÌn International Airport, San Juan, Puerto Rico. The airline does not exist anymore. US Airways Express is an airline brand name, rather than a fully certificated airline, and as such, the US Airways Express name is used by several individually owned airlines or airline holding companies which provide regional airline and commuter service for US Airways. The various airlines making up US Airways Express use Dash 8-100 aircraft. This X-Plane 9.x model of the -100 series is a nice replica of the original. The flight characteristics are good (spoken by an armchair pilot) and the aircraft is easy to fly with the mouse yoke. The cockpit is nicely done and includes 3D views. Outside graphics are "OK" but could use additional details. Nevertheless, the model is nice to look at.

Boeing U.S. Marine Corps MV-22B Osprey X-Plane 9.xShare
This MV-22B Osprey for X-Plane 8.x and 9.x is simple to install but challenging yet exciting to fly. Simply copy the extracted osprey folder to your favorite aircraft repository directory. Then, in X-Plane, link to that directory and select the acf file. The flight picture is very good and the graphics are photorealistic. The MV-22 Osprey is a multi-mission, military tiltrotor aircraft with both a vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) and short takeoff and landing (STOL) capability. It is designed to perform missions like a conventional helicopter with the long-range, high-speed cruise performance of a turboprop aircraft. The MV-22 was developed by Bell Helicopter, which manufactures it in partnership with Boeing Helicopters. The initial operators are the United States Marine Corps and Air Force. The FAA classifies the Osprey as a model of powered lift aircraft. The Department of Defense began the V-22 program in 1981, first under Army leadership, then the Navy/Marine Corps later took the lead in developing what was then known as the Joint-service Vertical take-off/landing Experimental (JVX) aircraft. Full-scale development of the V-22 tilt-rotor aircraft began in 1986. The V-22 was developed and is built jointly by Bell Helicopter, which manufactures and integrates the wing, nacelles, rotors, drive system, tail surfaces, and aft ramp, as well as integrates the Rolls-Royce engines, and Boeing Helicopters, which manufactures and integrates the fuselage, cockpit, avionics, and flight controls. Portions of the aircraft are manufactured in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Grand Prairie, Texas, and Fort Worth, Texas. Final assembly, flight testing, and delivery occurs in Amarillo, Texas. The joint development team is known as Bell Boeing.

    Hackers destroy AVSIM (it resurrects)
AVSIM, the popular flight simulator community launched in 1996 (one year before FS Aerospace Central was established), was destroyed by hackers last week. The site, which allegedly runs on two separate servers, had been processing backups of its content between the two systems without additional external backups. When the servers were disabled, the content of the servers was partially destroyed, causing large parts of the content to be erased. AVSIM has, since the attack, been able to recreate sections of its database and efforts appear to be underway to reconstruct many of the downloadable add-on files. For more, see the May 14, 2009 BBC News report on this matter.

    X-Plane 9 only $39 Limited Time
Microsoft has laid off its Flight Simulator development team (ACES) and currently does not have plans to continue work on Microsoft Flight Simulator. For many hobby pilots, this news comes as a shock considering the many years that Bruce Artwick and Microsoft have produced what appeared to be a best-selling simulator program. If you are upset and are looking for a good replacement that promises at or above par performance compared to Microsoft FSX, please take a look at X-Plane. The developer of X-Plane, Laminar Research, is currently offering X-Plane 9 at a special Microsoft transition price of $39 directly from its Web site (click here). X-Plane is 100% at par if not better than Microsoft Flight Simulator in respect of realism. Graphics are not far behind. Aircraft are available for download from fsaerospace.com and many other Web sites. X-Plane runs on Windows, Unix, Linux, Macintosh and even iPhone and iPod Touch. US Airways Flight 1549 Lands - in water
On Thursday, January 15, 2009, US Airways flight 1549 (Airbus A320) made an emergency landing in the Hudson river five minutes after take off upon incurring a double bird strike. A double bird strike is a strike to both engines of birds - in this case, apparently geese. The aircraft, which would have been able to achieve a regular emergency landing at the airport in the event of a single strike, was unable to return to LaGuardia. Instead, the pilot (Sullenberger) set up for a slow arrival river landing which succeeded with bravado. The flight path of flight 1549 is available here. A flight track log is available here. Microsoft's Yahoo Subsides
Well, as of this week it seems the Microsoft-Yahoo engagement has ended in a crash. Unlike many other sideline spectators, I believe the acquisition by Microsoft would have been a perfect opportunity to shore up the Microsoft Web offerings which lack in countless respects. Hotmail might still be the light in the mist, but most other Web features are subpar compared to Google and Yahoo with respect to functionality, efficiency (search capabilities), and appeal. For instance, Live Search bogs me down when I want to search the Web with needless colors and graphics. The results also appear to include fewer relevant hits. And Microsoft Maps, while apparently one of the first to use 3D imaging, now enrages me with its sloth-like loading and updating speed. None of this directly affects the reason why you are visiting fsaerospace - there is no direct connection between Yahoo and any type of flight simulator offering. An acquisition - if it will ever go through on other terms in the future - may have an impact on flight simulator community sites and possible networking functions.

Antonov An-225 (with Buran) for FSX and FS2004Share
This model can be used for FS2004 and FSX. It's graphic details and handing is extremely good. Nice flight picture in the sky especially at sunrise or sunset. Easy install in both versions: Simply copy the extracted directory into the /SimObjects/ Airplanes/ folder and start FS X. Shift+E opens the door and ladder. "I" turns on smoke effects. The An-225 Mriya (NATO reporting name: Cossack) is a strategic airlift transport aircraft which was built by Antonov, and is the largest flying airplane ever built by the most commonly accepted measure, maximum gross takeoff weight. The design, built to transport the Buran orbiter, was an enlargement of the successful An-124 Ruslan. Mriya () means "dream" (inspiration) in Ukrainian. With a maximum gross weight of 640 tonnes (1,411,000 lb), the An-225 is the world's heaviest and largest aircraft. The Hughes H-4 Hercules, known to most as the "Spruce Goose", had a greater wingspan and a greater overall height, but was considerably shorter, and due to the materials used in its construction, also lighter. In addition, the Hercules only flew once and never climbed above 70 ft (21.3 m), making the An-225 the largest aircraft in the world to take off multiple times. The An-225 is also larger than the Airbus A380 airliner, and considerably bigger than the Antonov An-124, 747-400ERF, and C-5 Galaxy, the nearest equivalent heavy airlifters. In November 2004, FAI placed the An-225 in the Guinness Book of Records for its 240 records. The Antonov An-225 is commercially available for flying any over-sized payload due the unique size of its cargo deck. Currently there is only one aircraft operating but a second mothballed airframe is being reconditioned and is scheduled for completion around mid to late 2008. The An-225 first flew on December 21, 1988. The aircraft was on static display at the Paris Air Show in 1989. Two aircraft were ordered, but only one An-225 (tail number UR-82060) is currently in service. It is commercially available for carrying ultra-heavy and oversize freight, up to 250,000 kg (550,000 lb) internally or 200,000 kg (440,000 lb) on the upper fuselage. Cargo on the upper fuselage can be 70 m long. A second An-225 was partially built during the late 1980s for use by the Soviet space program. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1990 and the cancellation of the Buran space program, the lone operational An-225 was placed in storage. The six Lotarev engines were removed for use on An-124s, and the second An-225 airframe (nearing completion and awaiting engines) was also mothballed.

Tupolev TU-144 SST - Qantas Concorde for FS XShare
If you've already downloaded the Air France Concorde available for download on fsaerospace.com here, please try this great Tupolev TU-144 SST (supersonic transport) aircraft. You'll note that this model is significantly more difficult to fly than a Cessna - but hey, have you ever broken the speed barrier in your trusty 172? Probably not. This model adapted for FS X by Eric Buchmann has very nice moving parts including afterburners, moving nose and winglet parts and great miscellaneous other effects. The Tupolev Tu-144 (NATO reporting name: Charger) was the first supersonic transport aircraft (SST), constructed under the direction of the Soviet Tupolev design bureau headed by Alexei Tupolev (1925 ñ 2001). Western observers nicknamed the plane Concordski (sometimes Konkordski), sounding Russian yet still very close to the Concorde (again, downloadable from fsaerospace.com), to which the Tu-144 was visually similar. A prototype first flew on December 31, 1968, near Moscow, two months before Concorde. The Tu-144 first broke the sound barrier on June 5, 1969, and on July 15, 1969, it became the first commercial transport to exceed Mach 2, and the fastest commercial airliner ever. Along with early Tu-134s, the Tu-144 was one of the last commercial airplanes with a braking parachute. The last two production aircraft remain at the Tupolev production plant in Zhukovsky, reg 77114 and 77115. In March 2006, it was announced that these airframes had been sold for scrap. Later that year, however, it was reported that both aircraft would instead be preserved. Currently, both aircraft are located on the open air parkings at LII aircraft testing facility, Zhukovsky. They are constantly used on MAKS Airshows. The only Tu-144 on display outside the former Soviet Union was acquired by the Auto & Technikmuseum Sinsheim in Germany, where it was shipped ó not flown ó in 2001 and where it now stands, in its original Aeroflot livery, on display next to an Air France Concorde.

NASA Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA) Boeing 747-100 (FSX)Share
The Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA) are two extensively modified Boeing 747 airliners that NASA uses to transport space shuttle orbiters. One is a 747-100 model, while the other is a short range 747-100SR. The SCAs are used to ferry space shuttles from landing sites back to the launch complex at the Kennedy Space Center, or more specifically, the NASA Shuttle Landing Facility, and to and from other locations too distant for the orbiters to be delivered by ground transport. The orbiters are placed on top of the SCAs by Mate-Demate Devices, large gantry-like structures which hoist the orbiters off the ground for post-flight servicing, and then mate them with the SCAs for ferry flights. In early test flights, the shuttle was released from SCA during flight, and the shuttle glided to a landing under its own control. The related Flight Simulator X model available for download here (as freeware!) has certain special effects, all moving parts, and a very nice CTRL-E sky bridge feature. If you are interested in the USSR competitor, consider downloading the Antonov AN-225 (with Buran shuttle) here.
